Detroit Public School Community District Southwest School

Detroit Public School Community District's Southwest School offers multicultural education featuring outdoor learning spaces and murals from local artists.

Detroit Public Schools Community District is developing a multicultural education space that will intertwine the Spanish, Middle Eastern, and African cultures that are present within the neighborhood.

This $30 Million, 75,000 sf design uses a precast concrete envelope with plans to commission local Detroit artists to render a mural on the exterior of the building.
The site design has a parklet that connects to the City of Detroit’s Joe Louis Greenway, which is 27.5 mile biking and walking trail that extends from the Detroit Riverfront to Highland Park, Dearborn, and Hamtramck. The space layout includes an interior courtyard where PreK and K students have a protected playground area.
